Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and hindering a legislative process.

The former director's attorney filed the plea representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for several causes including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they planned to file multiple legal requests to terminate the case before a trial, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to take over the legal matter.

The former director's case was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey seemed in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the magistrate state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the time, Mr Comey was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, James Comey sparked a backlash from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors claim James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved a person at the agency to disclose to news outlets information about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey posted to his online platform after he was charged, he said he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."

"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against the former director emerged after Trump published on social media demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and others.
