Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Affirms Willingness for Conflict-Time Elections Following Comments from Trump.

The President of Ukraine Zelenskyy has stated he is ready to organize a presidential election amid the current war, if Ukraine's parliament and international allies give their consent. This comment follows accusations from the U.S. President that he was refusing to relinquish control.

Obviously annoyed by the remarks from overseas, Zelenskyy stressed that "This question for the people of Ukraine, and not for individuals from foreign states, with all due respect to our partners."

Nonetheless, he promised to explore possibilities for holding a poll in the coming months. "Because this issue is now being raised by the leader of the United States, our key partner, I will answer succinctly: understand, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday night.

"In addition, I am requesting ... the U.S. to support me, perhaps together with European counterparts, to ensure security for the polls, and subsequently within the next 60 to 90 days Ukraine will be able to hold the elections. I personally have the will and readiness for this," he continued.

The U.S. President's Comments and The Country's Constitutional Situation

The comments were expressed by Trump in a lengthy interview released by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a considerable period," stated the American leader. "Understand, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a stage where it's undemocratic any more."

Zelenskyy's five-year term officially ended in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law prohibits elections in a time of armed conflict. Even, his rivals have consistently argued that security and political considerations make it impossible organizing an election during hostilities.

"Doing so would only be detrimental," said Serhiy Rakhmanin. "Zelenskyy is the supreme military commander, and the country is in a position where we lack that luxury, whatever disagreements we might have with him. It would only help the adversary," he added.

Logistical and Legal Challenges

Zelenskyy pointed out two primary issues that must be resolved: the practical issue of permitting military personnel, millions of refugees, and those living under occupation to vote, and secondly, how to legally conduct a vote while martial law is active.

He asked for guidance from allies on safeguarding the elections, and from lawmakers on how to change the legislation to permit a vote. "{I am waiting for ideas from partners, I am expecting suggestions from our parliamentarians, and I am willing to participate in the elections," said Zelenskyy.

Wider Diplomatic Background

Zelenskyy made these remarks while traveling back to Ukraine after wrapping up a diplomatic tour to several European capitals. This coincides with the U.S. administration has reportedly been pushing on Kyiv to agree to a peace deal.

Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a forum that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to worries of losing power. He also hinted that his father might "walk away" from Ukraine if the war persists. "{It's not correct. But it's not entirely wrong," responded Trump, when questioned about his son's claim.

Reports indicate that the U.S. has suggested Ukraine should cede the eastern territories to secure peace, a move that would be highly controversial within Ukraine. Additionally, there is presently no sign that Russia is willing to agree to any agreement, even a deal that might appear beneficial to Moscow.
